September Trip Details:

Registration deadline is Thursday, September 9th, 2010. Please make sure you have registered for the trip by the end of this day. Go to www.troop502.com look under the events tab and register for the trip. This also includes any adult making the trip.

Activity:

Backpacking on the AT at Roan Mountain Tennessee from Carvers Gap to Hwy 19E, approx. 13 miles over 2 days. We will be starting out at an elevation of 5500′ and climbing as high as 5900′ but then descending gradually to the end of the trail at 2900′. This is a hike you do not want to miss. Wide open balds, great views on clear days, and awesome scenery.

Dates:

Friday, September 17th – Sunday, September 19th, 2010

Plan of Action:

Friday, 9/17 – Troop will meet at 5:30pm and depart by 6pm from Harrison UMC. We will be staying at Camp Grimes on Friday night and preparing our gear for the weekend. We will stop going up to have dinner on Friday night, so please bring some money to cover this. Troop will travel in Class “B” shirts.

Saturday, 9/18 – Troop will depart from Camp Grimes very early on Saturday morning (5:30am) and stop for breakfast at a fast food place on the way to the trail head (bring money for food). We anticipate being at the trailhead and ready to hike by 8am or 8:30am at the latest. Depending on the number that attend will determine the number of groups we have and the direction we travel in. We anticipate hiking at least 8-10 miles on Saturday and the reminder on Sunday morning. See gear list below for personal equipment and food. Each Scout or adult that attends is responsible for their own food for lunch and dinner on Saturday and Sunday morning breakfast. There will be plenty of backpacking stoves to share. Food will be covered in depth at regular troop meeting on Monday night September 13th.

Sunday, 9/19 – Troop will continue to hike the rest of the trail and depart for home as soon as possible. We will be stopping for lunch on the way home. Anticipate the Troops arrival back to church somewhere between 2-3pm. We will call once we are on our way.

Equipment:

Personal Camping Gear for the weekend – sleeping bags, backpacks, flashlights, clothing, etc

Hiking boots and dry socks are very important…..

Water bottles or camel backs are essential on this trip. Each person will be required to carry their own water. There are several fresh water springs along the way to fill up as we need them.

Rain Gear is must have, do not leave home without it!! The weather at Roan Mtn can change without notice in a split second. Be Prepared!!

Tents will be checked on Monday night the 13th and handed out on Friday night at Camp Grimes for proper packing with tent buddies.

Food – freeze dried foods, snacks, etc – covered more in depth at Patrol meetings on Monday the 13th.

October Campout – Camporee 2010

If you are planning to attend the October Campout on October 15th -17th. Registration is now being taken and must be completed by September 30th. Please let Mr. Lee know if you plan on attending.

High Adventure 2011 (Seabase Crews)

Don’t forget your next payment of $312.50 is due on or before Monday, September 27th, 2010. This is your last opportunity to back out, if you decide not to go after this date you will be responsible for the entire seabase fees going forward (another $312.50 in March 2011). Please see Melody Lee or Joe Lane to take care of this.

On a related note, we encourage all scout parents and family to attend Court of Honor. The boys work hard to achieve their rank advancements and merit badges, and we should show all boys our support by being in attendance. Please make every effort to attend whether your scout is being recognized that evening or not. A great amount of preparation goes into the ceremony and being in attendance shows gratitude to our leaders as well. Looking forward to seeing all on Monday night!
