BSA Troop 502 Golf Outing Fundraiser Update

A reminder that our 7th annual BSA Troop 502 golf outing fundraiser will be held on Saturday, June 9th at Stonebridge Golf Club. This is the only fundraiser of the year where all proceeds go to our general funding account. This general account helps to purchase and maintain equipment, subsidize activity fees for trips, and overall support our scouting program. Parent assist is URGENTLY needed on that day to help make the event successful. If you cannot play in the tournament, please consider volunteering to help run the event that day. We need parents for check-in, and to take turns ”watching the challenge holes”. If we get enough help we can possibly only have to commit parents to an hour or so of their time. We hope with enough help we can schedule parents and get everyone in and out.

Again, this is our only fundraiser in which all proceeds go to troop funds. All our other fundraisers throughout the year are conducted as a way for scouts to pay their dues obligations. As you can imagine, the costs of running a troop do not diminish each year, but only increase with the economy and troop size. We have been very fortunate to not have to raise dues for quite a few years now, however, that issue may have to be re-examined for the coming year should our fundraiser not come across as successful as we hope it will be.

Of course, if you would prefer to play in the tournament (8 years and over please with an adult) that is welcome as well!

May Camping Trip Details – VA Creeper

Friday, May 18th, 2012:

5:30pm – Meet at Harrison UMC to load gear.

6:00pm – Depart for VA Creeper – Troop will depart with you or without you at 6pm sharp. Don’t be late.

*Troop will be stopping for dinner on the way up to camp so please bring money to cover yourself.

9:30pm – Arrive at campsite

Sunday, May 20th, 2012:

*Troop will be stopping for lunch on the way home please bring money to cover yourselves.

1:00pm – Troop arrives back at church to unload gear and dismiss. Parents will be called with an approx. time on Sunday.

Things Needed for Trip:

* Uniform dress will be Class “B”

* Personal camping gear and clothing – please dress for the weather – dont forget your raingear.

* We will ride in the rain if its raining, so be prepared to get very muddy if that is the case.

* You are encouraged to bring your own bike helmets if you have one, if not the outfitter will provide you with one. Helmets must be worn at all times while on the trail, no exceptions. Biking gloves optional. We are renting our bikes from an outfitter, so no one is allowed to bring their own.

* You will need something to carry your water, possible lunch for Saturday, any snacks, first aid kits, etc on the trail with you. Small backpack, camelbacks, etc. Closed toed shoes required all weekend long at campsite and on the trail. NO electronics!!

* You will need money for the trip up and back for meals. Plus anything you might want while in Damascus on Saturday being apart of trail days. There are several ice cream shops and Subway available. The Troop will be carrying lunch with them in their personal packs or should I say each person attending.

* Remember this trip is alot of fun but we have to remember safety is the number one concern for us and others around us. Adult leaders will set the guidelines for the Trail on Saturday. Dont forget your cameras if you have one.

* Showers will be available for you to use at our campsite both Friday and Saturday nights.

Summer Camp Payments

Just a reminder that summer camp payments are due Tuesday the 15th. Please make sure to have your payment turned in so we can send the final payment to Camp Daniel Boone. There are no refunds after this payment so if your scout’s plans have changed I need to know now or you will be financially responsible even if your scout does not go to camp. May Trip – VA Creeper Bike Trip

The Troop will be traveling to Damascus Virginia on May 18th – May 20th to ride the 15 mile VA Creeper Bike Trail. We also plan to spend some time in Damascus after our ride enjoying Trail days, which is a big event for thru hikers on the AT each year. We will be camping in Grayson Highlands State Park for the weekend in the group camping area. We will be renting bikes from an outfitter at the trail, no one is allowed to bring their personal bikes with them. More details at tonight’s meeting. Registration for this trip is now closed. Troop Meeting Tonight / New Scouts 1st Meeting

Regular Troop meeting is scheduled for tonight at 7pm.

Troop will now move to Class “B” uniform starting tonight for the summer and early fall unless otherwise noted. Please pay close attention to uniform dress going forward. Class “B” in effect as of tonight, May 7th until further notice.

We will also be welcoming our newest Boy Scouts tonight at their first meeting since they crossed over. These scouts will be meeting together tonight along with their parents to take care of some important paperwork and begin their Scout trails with some older scouts and Mr Groce advising. Parents of these new scouts will need to be in attendance, if possible. We will be filling out Scout applications, New leader applications, and collecting the $80 due for each scout. We will also explain what will happen in the next few weeks as they progress towards their Scout rank.

As a reminder, our 7th annual Troop 502 golf outing fundraiser will be held on Saturday, June 9th at Stonebridge Golf Club. Scouts and families are encouraged to attend, children 7 and up are allowed to play as long as they are accompanied by an adult. This is our only fundraiser of the year where all profits go directly to the troop funds to help offset activity fees, maintain and purchase equipment, and overall support our very successful program. Please consider helping in one (or all!) of the following ways:

Hole Sponsorship – Perhaps you own or work for a business willing to sponsor a hole. Signage per hole is $125 with your logo. Family sponsorships are welcome as well! Please ask local businesses that you patron (dentists, doctors, orthodontists, restaurants, etc) if they will consider sponsoring a hole. I ask that all sponsorships be received by the end of May so that we may order the signs and have them ready for the tournament.

Door Prizes/Gift Bag Donations – All players receive a small gift bag with items donated by local businesses. We will gladly enclose their business card and any advertising media they wish to donate in exchange for a small item (can coozies, hats, etc). On the same note, we are gathering door prize items as well. Local businesses offer gift cards, etc for scouting events. Again, please consider asking when you patronize these businesses. Any donation is welcome!

Enlist a foursome and play the tournament - Recently, tournament forms went home with all scouts. Please consider inviting friends, family and work associates. All are welcome! Remember, we don’t make any money if no one attends!

Parent Participation – We need parents to help that day “behind the scenes” with player registration and some of the events. We hope that with ample particiaption we can do “shifts”, that way no one gets burdened with having to help with the event the entire day – you can simply help with your shift and then be relieved.

If you would like a golf outing registration form, or a hole sponsorship form , kindly e-mail me and I would be happy to get it out to you. Also, if you can help out in any capacity, either with prize procurement or simply helping the day of the event, please let me know as well. Wednesday, April 25th

The Troop will be loading ALL personal gear on the trailer from 7pm to 7:30pm on Wednesday night at Harrison UMC. Please make arrangements to bring your personal gear on this night cause the Trailer will be departing for Camp Raven Knob on Thursday afternoon.

Friday, April 27th

The Troop will be meeting at Harrison UMC beginning at 5:30pm and departing at 6pm sharp. That means with you or without you!! Don’t be late. Dress code is mandatory “Class A”. This means we travel in Class “A” do not pack it into your personal gear. The Troop will be stopping for dinner on the way to Camp Raven Knob so please bring some extra money to accomplish this. If you have not paid Mrs Miller for you food for this weekend, you need to handle this upon arrival on Friday night ($10 per person).

Saturday, April 28th

The Troop will be going on a 5-mile day hike carry lunch please bring the right clothing and footwear to accomplish this. This will satisfy at least 2-3 requirements for 2nd and 1st Class for everyone in attendance that makes the trip. If you want to fish you will need to bring your own fishing rods and tackle with you, there should be some time to do this during the afternoon. Class “A” uniforms will be required at the ceremony Saturday night.

Sunday, April 29th

Class “A” required once again for Scouts Own Service and traveling home. The Troop will not be stopping on the way home for lunch. We are anticipating getting out of camp no later than 10:30am and hopefully back to Harrison between 12:30 – 1pm.

Special Note:

At last nights meeting, we had several scouts needing to have their Scoutmaster Conferences for their next ranks. Please come prepared this weekend with all the materials necessary to complete these. Also, the Troop is missing about 4-5 tents, everyone please check their garages and storage rooms for this equipment, we really need to get these back along with the ground tarps that go under them.

Jake Howren Eagle Project – POSTPONED
